Planning a brand video: a pre-production checklist

Most of what makes a video work is decided before the camera is switched on. Good pre-production saves money, avoids reshoots and gives you content that actually does its job. Here is the checklist we use with brands at Utkranti Media.

Set one clear goal

Decide what the video should achieve: more enquiries, more sign ups, trust in a new product or awareness of your brand. One clear goal shapes every other decision, from length to tone to where the video will be posted.

Know the audience and the platform

A homepage video, an Instagram reel and a LinkedIn post need different lengths, aspect ratios and openings. Write down who will watch, where they will watch and what they should do afterwards.

Write the script and shot list

  • Open with the problem or the most interesting moment, not your logo.
  • Keep one main message per video.
  • Write the voiceover or dialogue in plain, spoken language.
  • Turn the script into a shot list so nothing is forgotten on the day.

Plan the shoot day

  • Confirm locations, permissions, people and props in advance.
  • Plan for natural light, or bring the right lighting.
  • Record clean audio; viewers forgive imperfect video faster than poor sound.
  • Capture extra footage for social media cut-downs while you are there.

Agree every format before editing

List each version you will need, such as a full-length video, short vertical clips, subtitles and thumbnails. Planning these up front means one shoot can feed a whole month of content.

When video is planned alongside your website or product launch, everything looks and sounds like it belongs together.
